George WOOD - Hastings

George WOOD a fisherman of Hastings was shot dead on 27 December 1748 by a soldier of General Harcourt’s Regiment as he was pushing his boat out. It was alleged that he was escaping revenue payment.

The evidence that I have of this is a copy of the actual newspaper report in the ‘Morning Post & Daily Advertiser’ of Wednesday January 6th of 1785.

There is an ‘unchecked’ burial for a George WOOD on 30th December at St Clements (where he lived) , which I think is him, and that the entry of a child with the same name on that date in not correct and needs to be investigated closely.
