The Simmons Family of Sussex - from 1756

My story begins (as far as I am aware) with the marriage of Richard SYMOND to Elizabeth PAUL on 21 April 1756 in the village of GLYNDE.

Richard and Elizabeth settled in RODMELL and raised 9 children including my 4xGreat grandfather Edward b1763. Edward married Mary WILMSHURST in IFORD 8 May 1784 and this is where they settled and lived all their lives. Edward and Mary managed to raise 7 children Edward b1786, Richard b1790, William b1792, John b1793, Thomas b1796, Robert b1798 and James 1801.

Richard [b1790] married Mary HEMSLEY in 1818 Framfield where they had 3 children Richard (ggGrandfather) Mary and Mercy. The family then move back to Iford about 1825 and produced William, Charles and Harriett.

According to 1841 and 51 censuses, Richard was a shepherd but was blind. Son Richard married local girl Elizabeth RICHARDSON and, as far as I know lived, worked (shepherd) and died in Iford. They are both buried in the local churchyard.

Richard and Elizabeth had 6 children Samuel (gGrandfather) b1844, Edwin b1846, Stephen b1848, Elizabeth b1850, Richard b1853 and Alfred b1859

While most of this family stayed around Iford, Samuel moved all the way over to ALDINGBOURNE and, like most of the family worked on the land. He married Eliza ALLEN in 1868 and settled down to have a successful life. When he died in 1908, he had had a rise in status, as he was now a dairy farmer and left 243.5s for his widow and grown up children.

Samuel and Eliza had 11 children - Elizabeth b1870, Frank b1872, Samuel b1874, Thomas b1877, Arthur b1879, Harry b1881, Lily Kate b1883, John b1885, Richard Frederick b1888, William b1889 and May b1890. Elizabeth's married name was Shepherd and she moved away to Greenwich, Kent. Most of this generation boys served in the Royal Dorsetshire Reg't at sometime during the WW1 and came home safely. Lily and Kate both died in early childhood. Richard became a postman around Bognor for many years, Harry was a manager at a mushroom farm in Eastergate while Frank took over the running of the Robin Hood PH in Shripney in 1903 and the pub stayed in the family until 1969.

Frank was my Grandfather and after his return from WW1 married Emily HALL from Cuckfield [Brother Harry married Emily's sister Kate] Frank and Emily died within 18 months of each other leaving my father Francis to be brought up by his elder sisters. He was the youngest of 11 children the others being Olive, Ivy, Frederick, John, Cyril, Ethel. Alan, Leslie and Robert.

Samuel was the only member of his generation to venture far away before 1880's but we now know that previous generations settled in Lewes, Ringmer and Hailsham

I would love to hear from anyone who thinks they have a link with this family - near or far.
