1552 Sussex Lay SubsidySXLSCD-ROM Transcribed by Michael J Burchall, FSG, from the original records in the National Archives, together with an Introduction and Surname Index as well as Search Instructions and Links to other Websites. Men (and a few women) are listed with their Assessment and Payment which is totalled for each Parish. This tax replaced the earlier relief in Edward VI's reign and was the fourth payment in 1552 of the original tax of 1549. It was levied on goods worth more than Ten Pounds for native-born and double that for foreigners. Aliens (and denizens without moveable goods worth between 20 shillings [1] and 10) were assessed and paid 12d (pence) in the pound (5%) or a poll tax of 8d per head if they did qualify on moveable goods. .pdf reader is required. 1556- 1694 Sussex Church Court DeponentsSXXDPNCD-ROM The archives of the Sussex Church Courts are most interesting for local and family historians. Cases (known as Causes) could be brought by individuals or by direct summons from the court. Cases covered tithes, church repairs, pew allocation, probate, morality, matrimony, clergy responsibilities and even bewitching. Michael J Burchall FSG has extracted from the original records in West Sussex Record Office details of people who made depositions which include name, trade, age, birthplace and residences. Word searchable .pdf CD. Published by Parish Register Transcription Society.11.02
1625 - 1800 Sussex AssizesSXXASZCD-ROM Abstracts of 2718 cases tried between 1625 and 1800 at the higher Assize Courts held in Lent and Summer at Horsham (which had the county gaol from 1541), East Grinstead (a popular venue for Justices before turnpike roads) and Lewes. The CD complements the classic "Millennium of Facts of The History of Horsham and Sussex 947-1947 compiled by William Albery. It also includes a list of Burials of prisoners from Horsham Gaol, and the old and new references to Assize Indictment Files in The National Archives with Dates and Places held, as well as a Surname Index. 1696 Association Oath Rolls for Sussex and Cinque PortsSXORCD-ROM A full transcript of all the Sussex (and Cinque Ports) men who signed an Oath of Allegiance to King William III in 1696 following an attempted assassination. Men (over age 20) including clergy are listed in the place they signed, and only 5% signed by mark. Michael Burchall has transcribed all these signatures from the originals at the National Archives and he writes a full historical introduction and gives a potted biography of major office bearers. Sussex is one of the first counties where names have been abstracted. These Oath Rolls of 1696 fill the gap between the Hearth Tax Lists of the 1660s and the Land Tax Lists of 1785 (extracted by the Sussex Record Society). .pdf word-searchable CD requiring Adobe Reader Version 9 or later. Published by Parish Register Transcription Society.8.92
1805 West Sussex Land TaxSXXLTXCD-ROM Land Tax began in 1692/3 and was made permanent by statute in 1798. It was a tax on personal property including land, houses, shops, wharfs, woods, meadows, mills, tithes, glebes and salaries. Michael Burchall has been transcribing Land Tax Returns since 1973. The 1785 Sussex Returns have been published by Sussex Record Society, so Michael has chosen to abstract returns a generation on, for 1805 for West Sussex from the originals at West Sussex Record Office. The CD lists the Owner, Occupier and Rental, parish by parish and is a word-searchable pdf Document requiring Adobe Version 9 or later. Published by Parish Register Transcription Society.11.02
1815 West Sussex Land TaxSXXLT2CD-ROM To celebrate the bicentenary, Michael Burchall has transcribed another annual Land Tax for West Sussex, following his previous one for 1805. Full details have been transcribed from digital copies of the handwritten returns at WSRO on over 300 pages and indexed with a useful historical Introduction. Since 1973 Michael Burchall has been transcribing Land Tax returns with other SFHG Members which were published in early editions of the SFHG Journal "Sussex Family Historian" and included East Sussex places from Albourne to Brighton until the enormity of the project overtook them. Sussex Record Society have published the returns for 1785 only in two books at 20 each. Published by Parish Register Transcription Society.11.02
